Twitter began blocking signed-out users from viewing tweets via the Twitter website yesterday.

At the time of writing, when a user attempts to access a tweet or profile via a direct link, they  are redirected to a sign-in page.

According to Twitter CEO Elon Musk, the change is a “Temporary emergency measure” established to prevent web scrapers.

The change also prevents other social media apps, such as Discord, from embedding Twitter links using OpenGraph metadata. Similarly, it prevents tweets and profiles embedded via Twitter Publish embed codes from loading unless the user is signed in.

“We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users,” Musk stated. The Terabyte Tribune inquired as to when Twitter intends to lift the measure. “💩,” Twitter wrote in an email reply.

Musk, who purchased Twitter last year for $44 billion, reportedly laid off much of the company, including most of the communications team.
